Daniel Radcliffe Allen Ginsberg

Daniel Radcliffe Allen Ginsberg - Daniel Radcliffe defends casting as poet Allen Ginsberg

Daniel Radcliffe Allen Ginsberg - Daniel Radcliffe says he has prepared a defence against people who criticise his casting as US poet Allen Ginsberg.

The writer was famously unkempt with an unruly beard - a very different look to the clean-shaven Harry Potter star. daniel radcliffe allen ginsberg,

But Radcliffe said he had no qualms about his looks after James Franco portrayed Ginsberg in 2010's Howl.

He told the BBC: "Any criticism of me not looking right for the part - well, James Franco is way too good-looking to play Allen Ginsberg." daniel radcliffe girlfriend,

Radcliffe, 22, will play a young Ginsberg in the forthcoming thriller Kill Your Darlings. jack kerouac,

The film is based on the true story of the murder of David Kammerer, an event that united the beat poet Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs at Columbia University in 1944.

Principal photography for the film starts on 12 March in New York. elizabeth olsen,

Ginsberg, famed for his 1957 poem Howl, was one of the leading figures of the 1950s beat generation of US artists.

The beat writers rejected materialism and conformity and promoted personal freedom and the use of mind-altering drugs.

Ginsberg has previously been played by comedian David Cross in the 2007 film I'm Not There; and Franco, whose film dramatised the obscenity trial surrounding Howl. jack kerouac,

Radcliffe told BBC News: "I won't watch any of them because I'm a terrible copycat".

Although the most famous image of the poet is as a balding 30-year-old with a full beard, Radcliffe said he would not be trying to recreate the look.

"This is a 19-year old Ginsberg," he said. "I remember somebody saying to me, 'Are you going to grow a beard?'

"No, l'm not playing him at 40. That would be weird, they wouldn't have cast me. He's 19, clean shaven and has just got into Columbia University."

Good taste

The role is the latest dramatic outing for Radcliffe since the end of the successful Potter franchise.

Previously, he has stripped on stage for the play Equus and starred in a Broadway revival of the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

He will next be seen as a grieving husband and father in horror film, The Woman in Black, based on the long-running stage show.

Radcliffe said he was committed to showing his versatility as an actor.

"I think it's as important to me, as it is any actor who has any aspirations of having a long career," he said.

"Ultimately, I think it's about showing people that you have good taste, I suppose.

"For instance, if a Brad Pitt film comes out, I'll go and see it because, even if I know nothing about the film, I know he's got pretty good taste and it's going to be interesting at the very least.

"I suppose it's about letting people know that I'm doing the type of films they want to see."

George Lucas Red Tails

George Lucas Red Tails - In an appearance on The Daily Show last night, George Lucas said that he had trouble getting funding for his new movie, "Red Tails," because of its black cast.

"This has been held up for release since 1942 since it was shot, I've been trying to get released ever since," Lucas quipped to Jon Stewart. "It's because it's an all-black movie. There's no major white roles in it at all...I showed it to all of them and they said no. We don't know how to market a movie like this."

"Red Tails," which stars Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Terrence Howard, is based on the Tuskegee Airmen, the group of pioneering black pilots who fought in the United States' segregated armed forces during World War II. The movie is directed by Anthony Hemingway, the rare black director getting a chance to direct a big-budget feature.

Last week, Lucas told USA Today that he was worried that if Red Tails was a failure, it could have negative repercussions for black filmmakers. "I realize that by accident I've now put the black film community at risk [with Red Tails, whose $58 million budget far exceeds typical all-black productions]," he said. "I'm saying, if this doesn't work, there's a good chance you'll stay where you are for quite a while. It'll be harder for you guys to break out of that [lower-budget] mold. But if I can break through with this movie, then hopefully there will be someone else out there saying let's make a prequel and sequel, and soon you have more Tyler Perrys out there."

'Lion King' 'Dark Knight' rises

'Lion King' 'Dark Knight' rises - The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Gets Lion King-ized

No matter how many times the hero’s journey gets rebooted and remixed, it’s still entertaining to watch. Case in point: this mashup of audio from The Dark Knight Rises trailer with footage from The Lion King.

In “The Lion King Rises” we get a version of the 1994 Disney film with Zazu the bird acting out the part of Alfred, the majordomo of Simba/Bruce Wayne’s life and rise to hero status. the lion king rises, The monomyth megamix continues with lioness Nala as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Scar as Bane. lion king dark knight rises,

The rest plays out pretty much how you’d expect. One snag here though: When you’re looking at the The Lion King footage, it kind of sounds like those Gotham folks from Dark Knight Rises are chanting “Mufasa.” It seems odd they would be chanting it for Scar/Bane, but with trailer mashups you have to work with what you’ve got. the dark knight rises,  bane dark knight rises,

Heather Donahue blair witch

Heather donahue blair witch - Blair Witch Actress Heather Donahue Quit Acting to Grow Pot

In 1999, Heather Donahue was unexpectedly catapulted to stardom as a co-creator and costar of the indie horror film The Blair Witch Project – who memorably filmed herself crying in terror in the genre-breaking flick.

A few short years later, just as unexpectedly, her acting career stalled. And soon she was embarking on the most peculiar of second acts – that of marijuana grower.

"I took all my stuff into the desert related to my acting career and burned it all," Donahue, who turns 37 on Thursday, tells the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Well, she did spare one thing: the blue ski cap from the Blair Witch poster.

"That's the only thing I kept," she says. "I figured if things got really bad, I could always sell it on eBay."

At the time of Blair Witch's release, Donahue told PEOPLE that her newfound fame was "hilarious and overwhelming." But soon she became disillusioned. "The acting projects I was lucky enough to work on weren’t always things that I felt good about putting out into the world," she says now in a Q&A on her website. "I didn’t see that getting better as I got older. I wanted to change my life, see what else was out there for me, what else I might become."

She ended up following her then new boyfriend into a strange new life of growing marijuana, mostly for medical purposes – a journey she relates in her forthcoming memoir, GrowGirl: How My Life After The Blair Witch Project Went to Pot.

Donahue ended up living for a year in Nuggettown, Calif., with a bunch of growers and their "pot wives," helping to build grow rooms and tending to the crops. She tells the Inquirer that she was "always an avid gardener" and quickly fell into a routine, becoming "a solitary country girl" after her years in the fast lane in L.A.

She gave up growing pot after deciding to write about it – and after a friend got busted by the feds.

Donahue, who is now on a book tour, is torn about whether marijuana should be legalized. On the one hand, she's worried that corporations might run over the mom-and-pop growers. But at the same time, she thinks it's foolish to outlaw it.

HBO renews Enlightened

HBO renews Enlightened - HBO Renews 'Enlightened,' Cancels 'Hung,' 'Bored to Death,' 'How to Make It In America'

HBO has renewed critical darling Enlightened for a second season, Enlightened renewed, while opting not to move forward with three series: Hung, Enlightened renewed, Bored to Death and How to Make It In America.

With a slate of upcoming series including Luck, Enlightened renewed, Veep, Girls, Life's Too Short and Angry Boys, Golden Globe Enlightened nomination, the premium cable network cleaned house Tuesday, How to make it in America, making room on its schedule by ending the runs of the three low-rated comedies. Enlightened,

Hung, which stars Thomas Jane as a down-on-his-luck suburban high school basketball coach who resorts to male prostitution, Golden Globe Enlightened nomination, returned for its third and now final 10-episode season earlier this fall.

Though the half-hour series from Dmitry Lipkin and Colette Burson fell far short of garnering the kind of accolades or viewership that other efforts including Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones did for the premium cable network, it didn't go entirely unrecognized on the award show circuit. Jane and co-star Jane Adams were each nominated for Golden Globe nominations for their roles in 2010 -- only Jane was on this year's Globes roster. In the end, neither the praise nor the ratings -- its third season finale collected 930,000 viewers, down considerably from the 2.31 million who tuned in for its Season 2 closer -- were enough to warrant another season. Golden Globe Enlightened nomination,

Bored to Death, starring Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson, opened its third season to a similarly disappointing average viewership of just 240,000, a significant drop from the 1.1 million the second season garnered a year earlier. Bored to Death,

How to Make It In America -- often dubbed Entourage for the East Village set -- also struggled to find the buzz and viewership Entourage was able to garner over its eight-season run. The Bryan Greenberg comedy closed out its second season with a paultry 560,000 viewers. How to make it in America,

For its part, Enlightened opened to just just 210,000 total viewers in its October premiere, low even by HBO standards. While the critically praised Laura Dern vehicle continued to trot along with a limited viewership over the course of its freshman season, it earned what the other three series did not: awards show attention, picking up surprise Golden Globe nominations in both the comedy and best actress category last week.

Cohen dictator trailer

Cohen dictator trailer - It's nice to see a return to form for Sacha Baron Cohen. Ever since 2009's "Bruno," the hilarious impersonator has set his alter-egos aside onscreen for roles in "Hugo" and the upcoming "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" and Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained." That's why we were so happy to see that he was also working on the comedy "The Dictator" based on a script he wrote, following the happy tradition of "Bruno," "Borat" and "Da Ali G Show."

Needless to say, Cohen is one of the funniest comedians around. And if if we needed more evidence, a trailer for "The Dictator" has finally hit the web and it proves that Cohen is still as hilarious as ever.

"The Dictator" looks to be a cross between the faux-documentary-style filmmaking that Cohen popularized in "Borat" and "Bruno" and a straight-scripted comedy. The inclusion of actors like John C. Reilly, Ben Kingsley, Anna Faris and Megan Fox proves that it's a force to be reckoned with, but the trailer plays the movie off as being in line with Cohen's earlier films.

The official synopsis of the project is a comedy that "tells the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed." That should pretty much set the bar for what fans can expect when they walk into theaters on May 11. The funniest scene in the trailer definitely comes at the end when Cohen's titular dictator takes on some competitors in a sprint race. Needless to say, he has his own brand of hilarious absolute power.

No Del Toro in 'Star Trek' sequel?

No Del Toro in 'Star Trek' sequel? - There are two things you should know before you read this.

First, El Mayimbe of Latino Review has a very, very high accuracy rate with the scoops he breaks. No one is perfect, but he's got a track record that demands that you pay attention when he runs something.

Second, JJ Abrams has never directly lied to me about something. Benicio Del Toro Star Trek, He's demurred when asked some questions, and he's played coy about some things, but outright fabrication does not appear to be his bag. Benicio Del Toro Star Trek,

So… take those two things into account when I tell you that Latino Review is reporting that Benicio Del Toro will be playing Khan Noonien Singh in the upcoming sequel to 2009's successful reboot of "Star Trek."

And when asked to comment on the report, Abrams responded with two very direct words: "Not true."

There's been this overwhelming belief in the film nerd world since the first film came out that any sequel to the Abrams "Trek" would have to introduce Khan, and that he would have to be the bad guy. I'm not sure how Khan became the default Joker to Kirk's Batman, and I'm not sure I buy that we need to see that story told again. You'd have to somehow deal with all the "Space Seed" stuff that didn't happen in this timeline, and without that, there's no reason for Khan to be seeking personal revenge on Kirk. Benicio Del Toro Khan,

More importantly, it seems like such a simple choice that I have to believe the guys making this film have something more interesting in store. Now, that's not to say that it's impossible they'd use Khan, but why just tell the same story with him? What clearer way could there be to show that this is a new timeline than to find the Botany Bay, thaw out Khan and his soldiers, and have them end up becoming allies to the Federation? You could make a powerful film about the assumptions we have about people that would really play with an audience's expectations if you wanted to, and it would make it very clear that just because a familiar name or face shows up in this continuity, there's no guarantee that you know what's going to happen. Star Trek,

Then again, Abrams didn't play coy or dance around it. He just plain said, "Not true." So that seems pretty firm as a denial. Star Trek stars still waiting to see script,

We're not going to know for sure until they make some official announcements, and until then, all I can do is print both sides of this one. I have no real feelings about this one way or another until the film starts to come into focus. Until then, it's all speculation. I will say that if this turns out to be true, it seems to be further support for the theory I had at the start of the week.
